For anyone interested in seeing traditional Chinese swordsmanship in a modern competitive setting, please visit the MySpace page I set up for our league:

http://www.myspace.com/chinese_sword_league

One of the guys interviewed in "Reclaiming the Blade" was swordsmith Paul Champaign. Paul (who has unfortunately passed away) was an amazingly knowledgeable guy, and he was also one of the judges at our league's tournament in 2008. He may not have talked much about Chinese and Japanese swords in the movie, but he knew a HECK of a lot about how they were made.

Thanks for the review, Mark. Had film fencing remained popular it would probably have evolved long ago into what this documentary is trying to promote now. Why virtually no one has taken greater interest in reviving authentic Western swordsmanship in film up to this point baffles me when I see how dramatic it looks, even in simple sparring footage. There is tremendous potential here for a visionary director to rewrite the rules on classical Western film fighting.

I agree with you danmye. It is amazing that this tradition of early Hollywood A.D.s being derived from the cadre of fencing practitioners has not, currently continued, which could have provided a level of film fencing continuity rivaling Hong Kong's, and a perfect seque into the use of current reconstructed medieval swordsmanship as western film martial arts foundation.

BTW, in the caption of the two fencers on this page, the man to the right is John Clemens, founder and chief instructor of ARMA, an organization dedicated to the research, study and application of its revival of formerly extinct Western/European historic martial arts. You can go to ARMA, and other such HEMA (Historic European Martial Arts) sites, for more info. on the subject. Nice to see such an interest; this should do well for authentic depictions of Western martial arts.

Also missing is knowledge of African amrtial arts swordsplay, and the knowledge that "Western Swordsmanship" defines more than the simple use of the sword as a weapon but, rather, encompasses a tradition as indepth as that found in Asia or elswhere (as is, also, the case with African martial arts).

The irony of this, is that Western sport fencing, which was studied by earlier Hollywood swashbuckling AD.'s, such as Basil Rathbone, who were, themselves, fencers, is still practiced today.
