RED HEROINE (1929)

RED HEROINE, the earliest complete martial arts film from China’s silent film era will be screened with accompaniment from the Devil Music Ensemble in New York on August 9th. The event is being hosted by Rooftop Films, a non-profit summer film festival.

The Boston-based Devil Music Ensemble will be performing an original score to the 1929 wuxia classic that draws on the traditions of Chinese classical and folk music, as well as soundtracks from classic kung fu films.

DME has been performing in several states as part of a tour with RED HEROINE that began in 2008.

Directed by Wen Yimin, the film features one of the world’s first wuxia stars, actress Fan Xuepeng, in an archetypal story of a heroine wronged by a villain, subsequently trained by a martial arts master and set loose to seek revenge.

The event opens at 8pm on August 9th on the lawn of the Automotive High School (50 Bedford Ave. at North 13th St.). A martial arts demonstration will begin at 8:30, to be followed by the RED HEROINE screening and Devil Music Ensemble performance at 9pm.

An open bar after party will take place at Matchless (557 Manhattan Ave. at Driggs) between 11:30pm-1am.

Tickets for the event are available at the door or online. For more details or to purchase tickets visit Going NYC.
