Even the best action stars have to make a bad movie now and again. This is true in the case of the “Lady Dragon”, Cynthia Rothrock. This is a horrendous film disguised as a mixed martial arts film, or so one would think.
Rothrock plays Ivy Reed, one of the top MMA promoters in the business. Her latest plan to find her next champion is to invite five prospects to her house, where former fighter Jimmy (Josh Griego) will train them for a week. As the fighters train, Ivy has them under surveillance before they will face each other to determine who will become her next champ.
Sadly, and that term is meant literally, by the time the film ends, one is just not going to care. Director David DeCouteau and writer Charlie Meadows pretty much used the theme of MMA as an excuse for ladies’ eye candy. Judging from the opening sequence, one knows that they are in for something bad. The actors playing the fighters only seem to have looks and absolutely bad skills. One fighter who kicks looks like he can only lift up his five feet and even shows off how “not to” execute a proper spin kick.
The movie drags and drags, showing (of all things) shower scenes and training. It comes extremely close to being gay porn minus the explicitness. Even worse are the actual fight scenes, and there are only two. Yes, two with veteran stuntman Nils Allen Stewart as action director. With obviously inexperienced actors, the fights look horrendous, especially with the bad sound effects. It is as if they try to impress, but it just fails to a tee here.
There’s not much else to say about this film. Be happy Cynthia Rothrock will return to form in the upcoming WHITE TIGER. Otherwise, stay away from BADASS SHOWDOWN as it is just a distasteful offense against MMA. It’s so bad this deserves a turkey and not a star rating.
