SLAUGHTER IN THE SNOW is the third and final release from AnimEigo in a chambara series starring Yoshio Harada (RONINGAI) and is available individually or in the better-priced three-disc box set titled “Mikogami Trilogy.” It’s a standard release for the independent U.S. distrib best known for releasing the LONE WOLF AND CUB series on DVD.
Image quality is very good despite some graininess, flat colors and mild print degradation. Original Japanese audio is presented in two-channel mono and optional English subtitles are included. AnimEigo also includes a minimalist English sub option that is pointless.
Extras include program notes (on the disc) with little info about the production but a lot of historical and cultural footnotes. AnimEigo has an obsession with minutia details surrounding the content of their releases that may interest Nipoholics but will be of little interest to film buffs.
An image gallery features original production stills that are too small and overlap one another.
