Sammo Hung

Three weeks ago, Hong Kong action director and martial arts actor Sammo Hung was admitted to hospital for heart surgery after reportedly taking ill while filming IP MAN 2, Wilson Yip’s sequel to the award-winning, semi-biographical kung fu drama about the life of Bruce Lee’s Wing Chun master.

The 57-year-old martial arts film legend was discharged within days and returned to the set where he continued playing a prominent role as a Hung Fist master and choreographing fight sequences.

Hung has admitted that his health is not in ideal condition due to long working hours, irregular meals, cigar smoking, and morbid obesity.

Despite his condition, Hung sought to reassure questioning Hong Kong reporters.

“Everything is back to normal even though my weight has become a health issue, causing heart problems. I am now back at work and I would like to thank everyone for their concern,” said Hung.

Sammo, you are a great actor, director, producer and fight choreographer. I've been a big fan of yours for many years. Get well soon and take care of yourself. I would recommend quitting the smoking though. I never knew you were a smoker. Anyway, I'm wishing you the best & praying Jesus will make you strong. Peace and Love.

Good to hear Sammo's doing fine. I just hope he'll start taking care of himself.

We've had years of seeing Sammo exhibit crazy physicality despite his girth. How cool would it be to see him fit and trim while doing what he does?

Prior to the filming of Eastern Condors,Sammo had a personal trainer who helped him lose a lot of weight.Golden Harvest made him put the weight back on saying that a large part of his popularity was because of his size. That dog will simply no longer hunt. It's past time for Sammo to start taking serious care of himself.Trust me I know.I a let myself go and now I have type 2 diabetes and am on insulin. Lose the cigars, stop eating crap and lose the weight. Not for us but for you.

Take care of yourself better, big guy. We already lost John Hughes from the same unhealthy lifestyle. But we still love you for being our action movie answer to Ron Jeremy, man.

I really hope Sammo is okay. I don't want his role in Ipman 2 to cost him his life. It's just worth it Sammo. I hope he doesn't let the pressure of the film get to him.

This is scary news. I hope Sammo can recover. Please take care, Sammo

Hope he recovers quickly... and for his own sake I hope he gets his weight under control. Heart problems are no joke and his smoking doesn't do him any favors either. My thoughts are with him for a speedy and complete recovery.

(That picture of Sammo clutching at his chest might not be the most tasteful illustration for this article, just sayin'.)

A true legend in the martial arts community and the world of cinema. I hope this will be all he needs to take better care of himself. Both he and his son were great in the Yong Chun T.V. series from 2007. I wish him the best of health.
