Stephen Chow MTV has spotted an interesting item on SpoilerTV regarding a casting call for the role of Kato in Seth Rogen’s THE GREEN HORNET. It says producers are looking for a male in his 20s to early 40s and that martial arts experience isn’t required.

The last I heard, Stephen Chow was still planning to fill the role while Seth Rogen would play crime-fighting partner Britt Reid. The only significant change had been that Chow had stepped down from directing and the responsibility had fallen to arty filmmaker Michel Gondry. Although no official statement has been made it now it appears that Chow will not be playing Kato either.

Considering that Chow’s involvement was the best thing this project had going for it, this can’t be considered a good thing for anyone except aspiring Kato’s out there. There are rumors that other big-name Hollywood actors may be appearing in the film including Adam Sandler and Cameron Diaz. Call me biased but you could put in a dozen of Hollywood’s top comic actors together and they wouldn’t measure up to Stephen Chow at his best.

Comic actor Seth Rogen (PINEAPPLE EXPRESS) has been trying to get a big-screen adaptation of ’60s-era TV series THE GREEN HORNET made with himself in the lead as masked superhero Britt Reid and KUNG FU HUSTLE director and star Stephen Chow as his sidekick Kato, a role originally played with flair by Bruce Lee.

With Chow out of the picture, this could significantly alter the direction the film takes given the loss of Chow’s masterful comic instincts, physical skills and ability to mimic Bruce Lee in a respectful way. I’m certain the role would have been tailored for Chow so I expect rewrites to be in the works.

This news will hardly be seen as a loss for Chow as he is still at the top of his game in Hong Kong and mainland China. He’s currently at work on an animated sequel to the family-friendly sci-fi drama CJ7 and is planning a new adaptation of the Chinese literary classic “Journey to the West.” (As a commenter below mentioned, he is also attached to a KUNG FU HUSTLE sequel but it was announced back in 2005 and there is nothing to suggest it has moved beyond the development stage since.)

Update: In a statement, a spokesman for Columbia Pictures has come forward to confirm that Stephen Chow will not be playing Kato. “There was a mutual and amicable decision by both sides to move on. We are out now to cast a new Kato and remain fully committed to Michel Gondry’s exciting vision for the film, which will begin production this September.” (Source: Entertainment Weekly)

Yay... Hopefully this will follow the short list of "films that never were".

    I'm happy.
  • What a shame...this project sounds like its about to derail.

The problem with a green hornet movie is that no one cares about the title character; they only care about the sidekick. It's hard to market a movie like this. If you remain faithful to the tv show, then the movie should be called Kato. If Seth Rogen is going to be the GH, I think Dr. Ken Jeong would be a perfect Kato. Just go all out R rated with lots of cussing and violence and Kato telling GH the old ching chong stereotype days are over and that he runs the show when the shit hits the fan. Rogen can play a bumbling GH with no idea how to fight. A wannabe superhero. That would be the most appropriate way to go. Stephen Chow is really too good to be playing a sidekick. Considering his immense respect for Bruce Lee, I'm sure his ideas for Kato are different from Rogen's.

Ken Jeong as Kato - great idea. Plus theyve worked together before. Two lead action guys played by bickering comedic stars. now THAT id pay to see. Almost like they are stuck in a tv show.

The only appeal of Green Hornet is the character Kato. If Kato is ill-represented , no amount of comedy can substitute that. Seth Rogen should've stepped down on this one. He only does comedies, not actioners. LAME!

a sequel to CJ7? that's new. i guess Kungfu Hustle 2 is out the window.

way the go chow! i'm happy he dropped out. i hate seth, and them 2 don't mix well together. stephen chow is a bigger star than him, and since he left, it says a lot about seth's green hornet version.

I still don't get, why, after the success of CTHD, Hero, that godawful Ju-On remake, and the last Fast and the Furious movie, Hollywood still doesn't want to take more chances on Asian talent. The Pangs and Andrew Lau get booted from their projects; Ryuhei Kitamura's foray into American action-horror gets sent to DTV Hell; and Stephen Chow gets booted from an action-comedy take on a classic series in favor of a guy who's completely unsuited for action-comedy. Meanwhile, an R-rated horor movie with Gianna Jun ends up getting a higher PTA than a high school sex comedy with that blonde chick from Heroes.

Anyway, Rogen isn't a draw, and neither is Gondry. Eternal Sunshine only made money, because Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet were in it. Everything else the director's had his name attached to has been a total bomb. So I'm not sure what the studio is thinking, other than that it's hoping to come up with a more successful Kung Pow [Or worse-the Uma Thurman Avengers.], since that's the only direction I see for Hornet now. It might've been nice to modernize it into a buddy movie, like Rush Hour, but they're going for that sidekick gimmick which was pretty tired with the Schumacher Batman films.

this may not be as bad as it sounds cos i feel that many of the asian actors who have entered hollywood have failed to deliver. Stephen chow is really talented but his humour tends to be more suited to the hong kong audience and i feel that hollywood would only hold him back. I also i think that if the film was ever made it would focus more on seth rogen opposed to the asian character kato because unfortuanately asian actors are never really given the best opportunity to shine.
