Overview: The Iron Triangle of director Chang Cheh and leading men David Chiang and Ti Lung return for another period martial arts actioner in the tradition of the ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN trilogy and THE HEROIC ONES. Very loosely based on history, THE DEADLY DUO concerns efforts by a team of fighting heroes fronted by the axe-wielding hero Bao Ting-tian (Ti Lung) to rescue a Song Dynasty prince from invading Jin forces. Their primary obstacle is a dangerously decrepit bridge that provides a largely unguarded back entrance to the enemy fortifications. To safely cross the bridge, they attempt to recruit the martial world’s top light step kung fu master but he turns out to be in league with the Jin. They instead receive aid from his brother, Yian Luyan (David Chiang), a specialist in light step kung fu and the rope dart. The heroes must also overcome five cunning agents of the Jin, each with special abilities, and an army of soldiers. The film sees supporting actor Wang Chung stepping out to showcase his screen fighting abilities alongside Chiang and Ti. Incidentally, the five Jin agents – three of whom are played by Bolo Yeung, Lau Kar-wing and action director Tang Chia – share fighting characteristics with the principle characters in another Chang Cheh film that came out over a decade later, the FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS.
