Two Chinese-language trailers have surfaced for writer-director Tian Zhuang-zhuang’s period fantasy actioner THE WARRIOR AND THE WOLF, starring Maggie Q (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD) and Japanese actor Joe Odagiri (PLASTIC CITY). The film most recently premiered at the Toronto Film Fest and is headed to the Venice Film Fest next.

Tian’s script is based on a novella by Japanese author Inoue Yasushi and concerns a disillusioned general in ancient China who becomes stranded in a village populated by clansmen with a mystical relationship to wolves.
According to a dry review from Screen Daily, the film contains “brutal battle sequences and several torrid sex scenes.” It goes on to suggest that the story possesses “unwieldy knots,” editing is “nervous” and the leads “aren’t overly committed” to their characters.
