U.S. release dates for ‘Chocolate’

By Mark Pollard | Published January 14, 2009

Prachya Pinkaew’s latest Thai martial arts extravaganza, starring Jeeja Vismitananda (as she is now being billed) will be screening in a few cities on February 6th, a mere four days ahead of arriving in stores on DVD and Blu-ray.

Magnolia Pictures’ web site lists the following screening locations.

Boulder, CO: International Film Series
Denver, CO: Esquire Theatre
New York, NY: Sunshine Cinema
Austin, TX: Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar
Dallas, TX: Inwood Theatre
Seattle, WA: Egyptian Theatre

It’s not yet clear what we can expect from this U.S. version in terms of language tracks or length. Based on previous Asian film releases from Magnolia it’s likely that the original Thai audio track will be available alongside an English-dubbed version on the DVD and Blu-ray releases.

What I am less certain of is the running time. The original Thai print is 110 minutes but I’m seeing a variety of sources suggesting the U.S. print may be more like 90 minutes. Prospects for seeing an uncut release look dim if we look at running times for other international prints of CHOCOLATE. Showbox’s U.K. release was 89 minutes and included roughly 14 minutes of deleted scenes as bonus content. The Hong Kong print is listed at 92 minutes and even the Malaysian print is listed at only 99 minutes.

There is a chance that Pinkaew had planned for CHOCOLATE to be cut for international release. His previous martial arts films with Tony Jaa contained some localized humor, dialogue and celebrity cameos, all of which would be lost on most foreign audiences. This is one significant reason why THE PROTECTOR ended up losing nearly 30 minutes of footage when The Weinstein Company released it Stateside. This was one of the few cases in which I have sided with TWC. Pinkaew’s greatest weakness in all of his films is consistently bad scripts.

U.S. poster for CHOCOLATE (2008).

Greatly anticipated this movie, i was very happy to see a little originality or at least a little bit for difference from my usual take of these types of movies. its a really bad thing when people dont at least watch something once. just to at least give it a chance, some movies you see now comming back out were so well done back in the stone age when movies sucked no matter what you watched; what i'm getting at is that low budget may be the words you were looking for, maybe not "crap" because i genuinely liked this film. i even went thru the torture of watching it without subtitles because i couldnt even FIND another copy. i was still happy with the movie. it may have been crap, but one mans crap is another mans treasure. i do say so myself... this movie, was fun. =)

It depends on how much you order. I ordered two 3-disc box sets and 2 single disc DVDs (Chocolate being 1 of them) and shipping was &6.05 which = $8.57 USD. I like to use XE.com for currency conversion.

looks like they have had it on the market a lot longer than we have - sadly

    how much for shipping?

FYI..amazon.co.uk has the PAL UK version [Showbox Media] for &6.98 which = $9.57 USD! That's significantly lower than anywhere else, even HKFlix ($28.95) or amazon.com (24.49). If you like special features, the UK version has a lot of them and they will have English subs.
  • My pleasure Mark. Nice to be able to bring someinformation to the site when I normally take so much!

I guess I'll rest easier. I've been waiting FOREVER to get my hands on this film!
  • Dave, thanks for the info. If the Thai DVD is the same length then it looks like U.S. fans should be able to rest easier.
  • The running time of the PAL Thai special edition DVD and the PAL UK version is exactly the same, 89 minutes (despite the Thai box saying 95 minutes). PAL speedup would normally account for about 5 minutes, so either the DVD print was cut down from the cinema release (haven't heard anything to that effect) or the 110 minute running time is incorrect.

The deleted scenes on the UK disc are all B-roll footage and don't appear in the That DVD version of the movie.
  • I was relly looking forward for the uncut version, oh well I guess I'll just have to wait until it aired on cable, you can still see it on watchmovies.com for free and good qualaty too.
All these companies need to know that martial arts movies are meant to watch the way they were made 100% and uncut, this is why the bussiness is losing so much ground.

Oh well, between this, the sad collapse of BCI, and whatever wacky hi-jinx Dragon Dynasty pulls next, I'm definitely getting the message. "Put your wallet away. Please, please, PLEASE don't buy our crap."

Message received, understood, and acted upon. Thank God for Discotek. THEY seem to want my money.
