Dicing its way into Asian territories February 19th is KUNG FU CHEFS, a culinary kung fu comedy starring martial arts movie great Sammo Hung, pop idol Vanness Wu (DRAGON SQUAD), actress Cherrie Ying (LETHAL ANGELS), and Stephen Chow’s favorite fatty Lam Tze-chung (KUNG FU HUSTLE).

KUNG FU CHEFS (2009)

The film is helmed by action director Ken Yip (SHAOLIN VS. EVIL DEAD 2) and produced by former stuntwoman and martial arts actress Sharon Yeung (CHOI LEE FAT KUNG FU).

From gscmovies.com.my comes the following synopsis.

Jo had kept hatred in his heart for a very long time and did what he could to oust his uncle Wong Bing-Yi (Sammo Hung) from the village and to claim the rights to the “Dragon-Head Cleaver,” a symbol of power to the clan.

As Wong Bing-Yi was forced out of the village, he encountered Shen Qing (Cherrie Ying) by chance and is determined to help her during the troubled times at her restaurant “Four Seas.” Here, he discovered a young cooking wonder, Lung Kin-Yat (Vaness Wu). To bring Four Seas back to the top, Lung ends up representing “Four Seas” to the competition against Chef Tin (Lam Tze-chung), two times Top Chef winner and the head chef at “Imperial Palace,” the restaurant owned by Jo.

At the day of the finals, Wong Bing-Yi and Jo met privately to try to resolve their problems. Lung shined by overcoming many obstacles and preparing a dish called “Fresh Water Bak-Choy” just as his master, Wong Bing-Yi had taught him. However, the head judge has been bribed by Imperial Palace and he is also the master of Chef Tin.

Who will finally win the title of Top Chef? Can the “Kung Fu Chefs” finally win over the hearts of many?

The film scores zero points for originality. Kung fu and cooking has been done before, in Stephen Chow’s GOD OF COOKERY and Lau Kar-leung’s OPERATION SCORPIO, to name a couple. But just about anything with Sammo Hung in it is worth a look. Also, I’m willing to bet Sammo had a lot of fun doing this movie. It’s well known that in addition to being a screen fighting and kung fu master he also knows his way around the kitchen.

I predict this release will get a Tai Seng DVD release here in the U.S. later this year but it’s too early to know for sure. More certain is that a Hong Kong DVD release will follow shortly after the theatrical release.

Can someone go back in time and take out whoever was most responsible for the use of CG and/or Pop Stars in Hong Kong Action Cinema? I know it'll only delay the inevitable, but maybe we'll get a couple more years of good movies out of it...

this one looks better than both the chun li and dragonball movies. i like anything with kung fu and cooking, so i can't wait to check it out. i always knew sammo would do this type of thing, mixing martial art and cooking. the story is very chinese-ish, i kinda wish they did like a iron-chef type of a concept where sammo goes into a cooking competition against a japanese cook, and we see all sorts of chefs from all over the world, plus if they could get Takeshi Kaga the host of Iron Chef to be in the movie, omg it will definitely sell. now thats a movie i would go see lol.
