Xiong makes directorial debut with ‘Coweb’

Legendary Mainland China wushu champion turned Hong Kong actor and action choreographer Xiong Xin-Xin (ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA 3) had been working quietly on his directorial debut, a new action thriller titled COWEB. With the success of the Thai film CHOCOLATE and its star, Jeeja Yanin, Xiong hopes to launch female wushu champion Jiang Lu-xia as the next action star with this new film.

In COWEB, Jiang plays Yi-Yi, a young woman who was raised in a family of martial artists and becomes a teacher herself. When her father suddenly passes away, she becomes somewhat depressed until a young man, played by GEN-X COPS’ Sam Lee, offers her a job as a bodyguard for his boss. When her new boss and her husband are kidnapped, Yi-Yi is determined to find them and gets herself involved with taking on some of the top fighters of the world, not knowing that she is being taped for big gamblers on the Internet. When she learns the truth, she is determined to kick some major butt.

Xiong serves as both director and action choreographer. He has worked in both Hong Kong and Hollywood, showcasing his choreography skills in films such as SIMON SEZ (1999), THE MUSKETEER (2001), and EXTREME OPS (2002). His most well-known role as an actor is that of former baddie turned ally Clubfoot in ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA 3, in which he would reprise that role for the remainder of the series, working with both Jet Li and Vincent Zhao (Chin Man-Cheuk).

COWEB will also feature two prominent martial arts experts as three of the fighters that Jiang takes on in the film. The first is Japanese-Chinese-American action star Kane Kosugi, who is coming off a disappointing fight scene opposite Jet Li in the abysmal WAR. However, in COWEB, Kane has a prominent fight scene as a tae kwon do fighter named Song who takes on Jiang at a gym. The second fighter is German born Mike Moller, who plays a breakdancer fighter and the third is fellow German Wanja Götz, who takes on Jiang in a memorable kitchen fight.

Joe Ma Wai-Ho (LOVE UNDERCOVER 1-3) and Chan Shu-Chi produced the film based on a screenplay by Chan Wing-Sun.
